SHILLONG: The students’ union of Kiang Nangbah Government College in Jowai on Tuesday started a month-long protest against the state government for not providing hostel facilities.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, president of the union Jerina Lamare said hostels for both girls and boys’ are non-functional.
“Students have to stay in rented houses, which are rather costly. The government officers say they will take action but till date nothing has been done,” she said. Besides, Lamare also flagged academic problems. She said teachers in the morning section have stopped taking classes as they are not getting salary of Rs 5,000 for about a year now. This has affected the 1,000 students in the section, Lamare said.
The union members met Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on the issue. As for the pending salary, Rymbui said no financial decision has been taken till date.
