SHILLONG: As total seizures of cash amount in Meghalaya ahead of the April 11 Lok Sabha polls has gone over Rs 25 lakhs, the Election Commission is further intensifying vigil in the state to ensure that money power is minimised during the poll process.
Chief Electoral Officer, FR Kharkongor on Wednesday said that three teams of flying squads and Static Surveillance Team have been deployed per constituency all over the state
The statement came from CEO as election officials in East Garo Hills seized Rs 2.5 lakh on Tuesday taking the total seizure amount to over Rs 25 lakh in the state.
In addition, Income Tax department is also involved in the monitoring to see that money is not used during the polls, adding that officers in different levels are also keeping a vigil on any suspicious transactions in the banks across the state.
Kharkongor also said that the people could also use the C-Vigil App if they come across any such violations of the model code of conduct (MCC) or distribution of money.
Many people have, in fact used the C Vigil App and posters and banners of many prominent personalities were removed from different locations after people uploaded their videos through the App.
It may be mentioned that the first seizure of Rs 20 lakh was reported from South West Khasi Hills on March 16 followed by seizure of Rs 3 lakh on March 20 from Ampati.
Later on Sunday, Rs 1 lakh was seized from Ampati again. The money was recovered mostly from vehicles by flying squads and members of the static surveillance teams.
Police have also seized large quantity of liquor from Mawrynkneng, East Khasi Hills just few days back.
