FKJGP donates school kits
NONGPOH: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Myrdon Circle, donated notebooks and ball pens for underprivileged students of Umtasor Mawdkhar UP&SS and Umtasor English LP Skul in Ri-Bhoi on Tuesday. Luistar Lyngdoh, general secretary of the FKJGP, North Khasi Hills, lauded the initiative of the FKJGP and expressed gratitude for their kind gesture towards the needy. Others who were present included Banroy Wahlang, president of Sohkhwai Circle, Dominic Suhktung, secretary, Myrdon Circle, R Mukhim, Rangbah Shnong of the Umtasor Mawdkhar and headmistresses of the two schools T Mawlong and S Suting.
BSF intensifies vigil across border
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) troops seized 2,825 kg tea and 2,000 kg betel nuts worth more than Rs. 14.5 lakhs on the Piyang riverbank near Dawki bridge at the international border on March 21. Meanwhile, BSF also seized 15 cattle worth more than Rs. 3 lakh on March 24 in one of its special operations conducted at Lyngkhat in East Khasi Hills district. The troops also prevented illegal smuggling of liquor last week.
Drug abuse prevention event
Shillong: The Department of Social Welfare, Shillong, in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence, New Delhi, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will organise ‘Capacity Building Programme on Drug Abuse Prevention’ for functionaries of ICPS in CWC, JJB members, child care institutions, etc on March 27 and 28. The programme will be held at Institute of Integral Training, Brookdene, Jowai Road.
Wash station inaugurated
SHILLONG: A wash station at St Anne Secondary School, Mawtawar, was inaugurated on Tuesday by Bedarius Shylla, Assistant Governor Zone-X of Rotary International District 3240. The facility was constructed by Rotary Club of Orchid City (RCOC), Shillong, Rotary observes the Rotary International Month of Water and Sanitation in March, during which it aims to provide water and sanitation facilities to schoolchildren. The wash station will help 300 students maintain cleanliness and remain disease-free. Principal Reverend Sr Luigina Shylla lauded theRCOC and its president Judita Syiemlieh for the noble gesture.
Workshop on Khasi mandarin
SHILLONG: The National Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) in association with the Northeastern Council will be conducting a one-day workshop on Genetic Indication (GI) of Khasi Mandarin at Mawkyrwat Dorbar Hall, South West Khasi Hills on March 28. Khasi Mandarin is an exotic agricultural product that has been accorded GI registration tag. The fruit has bright coloured peel, pleasant flavoured pulp and aromatic fragrance. It is rich in ascorbic acid and calcium and is a great source of vitamin C. The main aim of the programme is to make farmers aware of the usage of GI registration and its legal rights.
Demo on earthquake today
Shillong: The District Disaster Management Authority, East Khasi Hills will conduct a demonstration on earthquake in collaboration with the National Disaster Response Force, Guwahati, on Wednesday at Pantaloons Mall and Assam Auto Agency in Shillong and St. Francis Higher Secondary School in Smit.
IIMC holds alumni meet
Guwahati: “Increased flow of brilliant students and provision for quality-professional education can bring about significant qualitative changes in the media,” said veteran journalist and author, Subir Bhaumik, during an annual meet of The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) held on Sunday. “The Northeast is a storehouse of potential journalists and communicators. Communities in the region have inherent communication skills which can help young students become excellent journalists and communicators.” added Bhaumik, who is also a former BBC correspondent. The meeting also expressed concern over increased pressure on the media in India in the past few years. The meeting further condemned the arrest of Manipur journalist Kishorechandra Wangkhem under National Security Act and the recent attack on Guwahati-based journalist, Chakrapani Parashar. The meeting also demanded an immediate release of the former.
Conference on adolescent health
JOWAI: Jowai Civil Hospital and the District Medical and Health Office (DMHO), Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Cell, organised the local CNE conference on adolescence health on Tuesday. The conference was thematised on “Adolescent Health Care: Opening Window of Opportunity for Healthy and Positive Development of Adolescents”. The committee was lauded for conducting the conference on such relevant subject. Annie VBR Chullet, organising secretary of JCH DM&HO, Jowai CNE Cell said that the programme focused on putting adolescents as key players in protection of their own health.
Book release
SHILLONG: A book named ‘Letters to PM, CMs & Others’ will be released by Rev GS Lyttan, Sr Administrator , Secretary of Presbyterian Church of India, Shillong at PCI Hall, Central Ward, Lachumiere in the city at 11 am on Friday. While speaking about the book, author PBM Basaiawmoit said that it is about Secularism and religious tolerance.
