Ajmal files nomination, vows to upset BJP’s apple cart in Assam

GUWAHATI: The President of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and sitting MP from Dhubri Parliamentary Constituency in Assam, Badruddin Ajmal filed his nomination papers on Thursday amid raging speculations about the party forging covert alliance with the Congress to prevent BJP juggernaut in the state.

The AIUDF which won from Dhubri, Barpeta and Karimganj constituencies in 2014 parliamentary election, is going to field candidates only in these constituencies this election leaving rest 11 parliamentary constituencies uncontested by it.

The AIUDF’s  decision not to contest from 11 parliamentary constituencies has prompted the BJP and its allies to accuse an ‘unholy’ alliance between the AIUDF and Congress even though both the parties have denied striking any poll ties.

After filing nomination papers on Thursday, Ajmal told media that the party aimed at defeating the ‘ communal’ BJP but denied having any poll-truck with the Congress.

He said the AIUDF was not going to contest from 11 of Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam to achieve its goal of ensuring defeat of BJP and its allies in most of these constituencies and victory of secular parties.

On the other hand Congress leaders too are on denial mood regarding ‘alliance with the AIUDF. It has been denied by former chief minister Tarun Gogoi saying that only weak parties like BJP needed to forge alliance before polls not the Congress.

Congress candidate from Nagaon Parliamentary Constituency, Pradyut Bardoloi  termed it a wild allegation of the BJP, which, he said, has been enjoying tacit support from the AIUDF all along.
