TURA: Former union minister of state and NPP candidate Agatha K Sangma has been critical of the opposition Congress for its attacks on her brother and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s MDA government in the state during election rallies urging them to introspect.

“The election campaigns of the Congress are filled with attacks against our government with charges that we haven’t done anything for the Garo Hills. But the Congress ran the government for 8 long years. I want the voters to see and compare what they (Congress) did for 8 long years and what our government under Conrad Sangma did in the last one year,” challenged Agatha during an election meeting at Asanang village of Rongram, 18 kms from Tura.

She said that the Conrad Sangma government had kick-started several developmental works for the Garo Hills and Tura, the most important town in Garo Hills, was finally receiving much required infrastructure that had been missing all those years.

“To improve the Tura road condition our government has sanctioned seventy crores of rupees while another Rs 3 Crore has been earmarked for beautification of Tura that will include children’s parks, all in a span of one year,” announced Agatha Sangma.

She added that this has been possible because of close support given by the ministers and MLAs of the ruling dispensation.

“If we elect a member of the opposition to Delhi can we afford to receive the required development Garo Hills needs?” asked Agatha Sangma.

The youngest daughter of the former Garo Hills strongman, Late P A Sangma, said that to win Tura Lok Sabha seat is a very big responsibility.

“For me, this seat (Tura) is not just about politics. This seat was cared and looked after by our late leader P A Sangma for the people of Garo Hills for more than forty years. I believe it is also my duty to do justice to it and to our people,” a confident Agatha Sangma told the gathering.
