Mawkyrwat: UDP general secretary and Meghalaya Democratic Alliance’s common candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in the April 11 election, Jemino Mawthoh, on Monday said that the Congress has started shaking after the regional parties — NPP, UDP, PDF and HSPDP — put him up as their consensus candidate.
Reacting to allegations of the Congress against the MDA government and the UDP in particular, in a public meeting at Mawkyrwat Market here, Mawthoh said, “It seems that there is a fear within the Congress because of the unity of the regional parties who have come together to fight the election. While touring the length and breadth of the constituency we have realised that the Congress is shaking because they know that they will lose this election,” Mawthoh said.
While appreciating the kind-heartedness and vision of the leaders of the parties for fighting the election together despite different ideologies and principles, Mawthoh said, “I have not seen unity like this where the leaders of the parties right from the state level down to the primary units have come together with the one objective of ensuring that the MDA candidate wins the election”.
Mawthoh said that the Congress, which presently has only 44 seats in the Lok Sabha, will not be able to come back to power.
“The Congress might improve a little bit, but will not be able to come to power. Who forms the government at Delhi, no one knows. It may be the third front, we will never know because India is a vast country,” Mawthoh said.
Speaking about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Mawthoh said that the people of the state should not worry because the government is committed to legislate laws to protect the interest of the Jaitbynriew and the state as a whole.
Others who spoke in the meeting included NPP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, UDP leader and Tourism Minister Metbah Lyngdoh, HSPDP leader and Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar, President PDF Mawkyrwat constituency Hadrian Lyngdoh, President UDP Mawkyrwat Circle Anvil Lyngdoh and NPP leader from Mawkyrwat Diverland Lyngdoh, who appealed to the supporters of the four parties to vote for the MDA candidate.
