TURA: Former Chief General Manager of the Reserve Bank of India, and the first Garo to hold such a top position in the central banking institution of the country, has joined the Congress in Garo Hills.
Retired CGM of the RBI, Beryl B Sangma, announced his support for Congress candidate Mukul Sangma shortly after joining the party on Tuesday.
Son of Karnesh R Marak, the first Member of Parliament from Garo Hills, the former RBI official said that the decision to join the Congress was taken because of the developmental works undertaken by the party.
“After conducting my own studies I found the Congress is the only political party which is actually working for the development of Garo Hills and Meghalaya as a state. That is why I decided to join the Congress and support Dr Mukul Sangma,” said Beryl Sangma in a statement issued to the media.
He also blamed the policies of the NDA government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the economic downfall in the country. “Having been a senior executive of the RBI, I have seen the destructive damage done by the economic and fiscal policies of the BJP and NPP governments and now I am giving awareness to the people of their fallacies and hollow election promises,” claimed the former banker.
Heaping praise on former chief minister and Congress candidate for Tura Lok Sabha seat, Mukul Sangma, whom he credited for the end to militancy in the region, the former RBI banker termed him as a man who is “development oriented” and attributed to him the establishment of several technical and educational institutions, police stations, new districts and civil sub-divisions, hospitals and road communication, among others.
Beryl Sangma held various positions in the RBI across the country. He was also on deputation to the Central Bureau of Investigation and represented India at the Interpol, in France.
