SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said the government will appeal before the Supreme Court to call off the rescue operations for the remaining 14 trapped miners at the Ksan coal mine with the nearly four-month exercise showing little fruitful results.
Bodies of only two of the 16 miners have been retrieved so far while another was detected but could not be taken out. They were trapped when water flooded the mine on December 13 last year.
Expressing concern that it is a massive challenge, he, however, maintained that the sentiments of the family members will also have to be respected.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an MDA election meeting here on Tuesday, he said by retrieving the bodies at least they could be given a respectful funeral.
He said, “The Supreme Court has directed not to stop the rescue operations right now. Therefore, it is going on. It is not an easy situation, but different agencies have been working to at least retrieve the bodies.”
