NONGSTOIN/Tura: The 11-year-old girl whose body was found in a stream in Langpih was raped, sources confirmed on Wednesday.
West Khasi Hills police detained an 18-year-old suspect identified as Blansius Nongsiej, who is from Umyiap village in Langpih where the girl also lived.
After the postmortem examination, the doctor on duty said it was rape.
The mother of the victim, Dansi Hoojon, filed an FIR against the accused in this connection and the case was registered under the POCSO Act. Investigation has started.
The girl’s body was found lying in a stream at Umwar under Umyiap village in Langpih area on Monday. It was spotted by one person and the matter was reported to the village head and the police.
In another incident of crime against children, a seven-year-old girl from West Garo Hills was raped on April 1 but the case was registered on Tuesday at Tura Women PS. The accused is still absconding.
According to reports, the minor was forcefully taken to a secluded area where she was sexually assaulted by the accused. He later threatened the girl from revealing about the incident. However, by the time she was able to speak to her parents about the incident, the accused had fled the village.
“A case has been registered and we are on the lookout for the absconding accused. All other procedures have been followed and a medical check-up was done on the child,” said district SP MGR Kumar.
The All Meghalaya Minority Students Union (AMMSU) condemned the incident and decided to take out a rally to spread awareness on crimes against women and children.
“We want the arrest of the accused and we will write a complaint to the SP and DC of West Garo Hills. This is barbaric to say the least and the guilty person should be caught and punished for what he did to the 7-year-old child,” said president of AMMSU Nur Islam.
