Welfare body for Garos in Khasi Hills formed

SHILLONG/MAWKYRWAT: A welfare organisation for the Garos, the All Khasi Hills A’chik Federation (AKHAF), has been formed in Khasi Hills.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, general secretary of AKHAF, John D Sangma said the federation, which was formed on March 30, aims to tackle issues related to healthcare, connectivity, education, unemployment and sanitation faced by people in rural areas.
Sangma said the federation will approach the government over the problems being faced by the Garo populace in South West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills.
AKHAF held a function in Mawkyrwat on March 30 where headmen and village leaders were present. Sangma had spoken in the meeting. In Shillong, Sangma said most of the Garo villages are neglected and there is lack development. The federation has elected office bearers with Clavstar Ch. Marak as president besides other members.
