SHILLONG/WILLIAMNAGAR: The National Council of Churches in India has urged citizens to reflect on the facts and values before the polling day. In a statement issued on Thursday, the council said the Constitution of India is “the bedrock of our democracy and we as citizens must cherish it and let our public conduct be guided by it”.
It pointed out that parties and associations are duty-bound to abide by the Constitution and respect the plural nature of our society.
As a note to voters, the council said apathy and indifference of the many can be a greater threat to democracy than the evil designs of a corrupt few. “So it is of utmost importance for everyone to go out and vote on election day and to do so without fear or favour,” it added.
In Williamnagar, keeping in mind the need to exercise one’s voting rights, East Garo Hills District Election Officer (DEO), Swapnil Tembe, had initiated a positive step by urging all eligible voters in the district to come out in large numbers and exercise their right to franchise on April 11.
As the voter’s slip is not a stand-alone document for identification of the voter, he asked the voters to bring along the EPIC Card or other alternative documents like the Job Card, PAN Card, Aadhar Card, etc.
