SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) observed Khasi National Awakening Day on Thursday to commemorate the first Anglo-Khasi War in the 19th century between the British Raj and the Khasi Hima led by Tirot Sing Syiem.
The union usually takes out a rally on this day but there was a solemn programme this year that was marked by distribution of pamphlets that highlight the importance of the day.
In the pamphlet, the union talked about the war between the Khasi-Jaintia Hima and the East India Company, Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826.
The union called upon the Khasi community (U Khynriam, U Pnar, U Bhoi, U War, U Maram, U Lyngngam and U Diko) to be united to safeguard their economic and social rights.
KSU maintained that the war is not over as there is a silent invasion against the indigenous communities and urged people to prioritise the issues of the community.
