SHILLONG: The NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has demanded termination of the vice chancellor after some students and teachers of the university were chased out by the CRPF on Monday.
NEHUSU leaders, who are in Tura, told The Shillong Times on phone that the vice chancellor has failed to maintain peace and stability on campus.
Condemning the incident, advisor to NEHUSU Rangdajied Marwein said, “This is an unacceptable act by the CRPF who have set up camp temporarily (on the campus).”
NEHUSU finance secretary Iarapbhathik Shangrit said there will be discussions with the students of the university on Tuesday.
The union members said the university’s students were never subjected to this kind of arrogant attitude of the administration.
Meanwhile, the president of Khasi Students’ Union-NEHU unit, Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, said in a statement the university administrator’s decision to allow the paramilitary forces inside the campus has posed difficulty for students who have to go through ID checking by these paramilitary personnel.
“…it is very shocking to visually perceive this act by the administration who sanctioned the university to be militarized,” he added. Sanmiet recalled that in 2014, Professor B Marboh, who was the Pro-VC, had assented not to grant any accommodation to any security forces.
He questioned whether the university is designated for students of NEHU or the paramilitary forces and pointed out that the students are facing accommodation problem and the university has failed to address that.
