SHILLONG:  A day after former Congress leader, John F kharshiing  extended his support to the MDA’s common candidate, Jemino Mawthoh in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections , the State Congress has hit back at the former Congress leader saying, he left the party simply because Congress could not give him a ticket for the parliamentary polls.

Talking to The Shillong Times here on Tuesday,  Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh said, “Congress party has nothing against him but it is a fact that he left the party because Congress cannot provide him the ticket to contest the election from Shillong Constituency.”

“He was one of the aspirants who wanted to contest the election from Shillong but since he did not get the chance to contest, he simply decided to leave the party,” Lyngdoh said , adding Congress can give ticket to only one person from Shillong seat.

Stating that his decision to leave the party will not have any ramifications on the party as the state is going for polls in less than  24  hours, he added that  the people knew Kharshiing was with Congress and prior to his innings in Congress, he was in UDP was well.

He also termed John F kharshiing as political opportunist.

Earlier, Kharshiing had defended his decision to leave Congress saying he was impressed by the united efforts of the regional parties to field a common candidate and hence he was supporting Jemino Mawthoh   from the Shillong parliamentary seat
