SHILLONG: Introducing Braille EPIC in the state on Tuesday, the state Chief Electoral Officer, Frederick Kharkongor, handed over the first card to disability icon Bertha Gyndykes Dkhar at a programme in U Soso Tham auditorium here.
Tuesday was the last day of campaigning for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on April 11.
On receiving the Braille EPIC from Kharkongor, a happy Dkhar said she can use the card for the Lok Sabha election on Thursday.
“It was a surprise, I heard they are doing the ballot paper in Braille but when he said EPIC, I did not believe and now I can use this when I go voting on April 11,” she said. Speaking at the programme, Kharkongor said staying away from voting is not a form of protest, but a surrender of rights while pointing out that different programmes and activities were rolled out by the Election Department to motivate the youth to vote.
“All these programmes that we are doing is to ensure that we engage and connect with you (the youth),” he said to an audience which mostly consisted of young people.
