SHILLONG: Sanbor Shullai, the BJP candidate for Shillong parliamentary seat, said on Thursday he would kill himself before Prime Minister Narendra Modi if need be to stop the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill from being enacted.
Shullai, who spoke to the media outside a polling station in the city, said he still opposes the bill and does not want it to be implemented in Meghalaya.
“Let the bill be implemented in other parts of the country but it should not be implemented in Meghalaya and other Northeastern states,” he said.
When pointed out that the BJP manifesto mentions that the party would go ahead with the bill if voted to power, Shullai said he was the first from the state to write to the prime minister on the issue and he would continue to oppose it.
“The bill will not be implemented when Sanbor Shullai is alive. I will kill myself. I will commit suicide before Narendra Modi to stop the citizenship bill,” he added.
The MLA then changed to other issues in the state like unemployment and lack of development.
He said many schemes have been earmarked by the BJP government.
“Take the case of Nagaland. The government there issued a notification asking all the youths working outside the state to come back. Now they are getting jobs in Nagaland. Lots of development. Thousands and thousands of schemes have been earmarked in all BJP-ruled states… This time people should vote for Bah Sanbor Shullai and the BJP. People should support Narendra Modi for (bringing about) change,” he added.
Meanwhile, former KSU leader Auguster Jyrwa, who is now a Congress member, said the BJP has no chance in the state.
To a query, the young politician said the BJP’s move to include the bill as priority in its manifesto did not spark protests by anti-CAB organisations because of the elections but agitations will start after May 23.
