Traffic jam worsens in Shillong

SHILLONG: Most  parts of the capital city especially the stretch from Anjalee point till MES point and nearby areas  has been witnessing  heavy traffic congestion  since last one week and the road in the stretch remains clogged frequently.

However, a senior cop from Shillong Police said that the stretch witnessed huge traffic jams as there was bazar day on Saturday and Monday as well.

Police also said that as rainy season have started, many tourists from Assam and  West Bengal have started arriving in Shillong and so the city is witnessing huge jams.

Another reason for the traffic jam on Sunday and Monday was that Shad Suk Mynsiem was observed and people from different parts descended at the Weiking ground in Jaiaw on Sunday besides there was also a musical concert on Sunday.

Police, however, said that some officers had been deployed in the  stretch besides personnel from Laban Police Station are also on the job.

It was also informed that flying squads which are deployed on Highways are also deployed as and when situation demands.

Realizing the need to de-congest the particular stretch, the State Government is also mulling to construct a small link road from somewhere near the Rhino point till the MES junction but the plan is just at the discussion stage.
