MAWKYRWAT: The people of Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills, including the pressure groups, NGOs and headmen had on Saturday convened an urgent meeting at Sngap Syiem College to discuss about the decision of the government to hand over the electricity services to the Feedback Energy Distribution Company Limited (FEDCO) without taking the people into confidence.
The meeting had formed the Mawkyrwat Electricity Consumers Forum (MECF) under the leadership of Syiemiong as Chairman and Deling Snaitang as Secretary and they will meet the Power Minister, James Sangma to discuss about the matter.
‘‘The objective of the meeting was to protest against the hasty decision and a lack of respect on the part of the state government for handing over the electricity services to the FEDCO without taking the people into confidence,” Chairman of the Mawkyrwat Electricity Consumers Forum (MECF), Wallambok K Syiemiong said, adding that the FEDCO was supposed to take over the services in Mawkyrwat Division this April.
The people of Mawkyrwat under the leadership of the headmen had decided in the meeting that unless the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) explains clearly to the people about the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the FEDCO and the role of the company in providing services, the people will not allow the FEDCO to go ahead with their work, Syiemiong said.
He also said the people of Mawkyrwat had demanded that the FEDCO should immediately stop the job recruitment and at the same time urged the people of Mawkyrwat area not to pay the bills in the name of FEDCO until everything is clear.
