SHILLONG: The problem of road congestion is getting out of hand as most parts of the capital city, especially the stretch from Anjalee point till MES point and nearby areas, is witnessing heavy traffic snarls for the last one week.
According to a senior Shillong Police officer, the stretch witnesses huge traffic snarls due to ‘bazar days’ on Saturday and Monday.
Also, the rain has started and many tourists from Assam and West Bengal are visiting Shillong leading to congestion.
Another reason for heavy traffic on Sunday and Monday was Shad Suk Mynsiem and people from different parts of the state visited Weiking ground in Jaiaw.
There was a concert on Sunday.
The police said some officers have been deployed in the stretch besides personnel from Laban police station are also on the job. They added that flying squads are deployed when the situation demands.
Realising the need to decongest the particular stretch, the state government is also planning to construct a link road from somewhere near Rhino point till the MES junction but it is in the discussion stage.
