High-intensity storm, heavy rains lash Assam

GUWAHATI: A high-intensity storm lashed most parts of Assam, including main city Guwahati, in the wee hours on Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction by uprooting trees, damaging houses and Bihu function pandals.

Several people sustained injuries in the storm that was followed by heavy rain, though no loss of life had been reported as yet, official sources said here.

High winds preceded the heavy rains in several parts of northern, western and southern Assam, while heavy downpour was reported from almost all parts of the state.

In Guwahati, several Bihu celebration pandals were completely damaged by the storm that lashed the city around 2 am on Wednesday.

As cultural programmes were going on at several Bihu celebration venues, artistes had to rush down from the stage and audience ran for cover.  Several people were reportedly injured in a few storm hit Bihu celebration venues across the state.

The storm blew away roofs of numerous houses and damaged several more in various parts.  Trees were uprooted at different parts, blocking roads for several hours in the morning.

Electricity connection has been disrupted at several parts of the state including Guwahati city many hours on Wednesday. The power supply is yet to be restored in many parts of the state as the storm caused severe damages to power distribution network in many areas in the state and was yet to be restored till afternoon today. Many electric poles were too uprooted in the state in the impact of the storm.

Some of the worse affected areas in the state include Tihu, Kaliabor, Kampur, Golaghat, Nagaon, North Guwahati and other places.
