New dist move faces financial roadblock

SHILLONG: The state government is examining the idea of creating a South East Khasi Hills district.
Informing this here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the government always wants to bring administration closer to the people but it is facing challenges in creating a new district because of financial issues.
“Given an opportunity, we would like to do it, but financial issues pose a challenge,” he said adding, however, the government is looking into the financial implications,” he said.
Different leaders from Sohra and nearby areas are of the view that the proposed South East Khasi Hills district should comprise of areas like Sohra, Pynursla and Shella.
The last time new districts were created was in 2012.
The previous Congress-led MUA government had created the four districts of East Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, South West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills.
