NONGPOH: A single teacher looks after as many as 150 students in a school in Ri Bhoi district!
Lawbyrwa LP School under Umsning constituency has one teacher and four class rooms with 150 students.
As most of the parents of the children are engaged in farming activity and coming from very poor background, sending their children to a good school outside their village is not possible.
The village leaders had set up the school in 1991, to make sure that poor children of the village get their education in an affordable minimal rate.
Though the school was set up before Ri Bhoi attained a full-fledged district status, the school has only one teacher and four class rooms.
This has come to light during the annual sports meet of the school held at the village, where the managing committee members in presence of KSU NKHD leaders informed that though they had visited the education office of Ri Bhoi district seeking SSA and other schemes for the school for so many years, nothing has been done by the concerned authorities.
They also informed that besides one deficit teacher, the managing committee had also employed two more teachers for the school.
But the managing committee finds it tough to provide salary to these two teachers. KSU NKHD President, Ferdynald Kharkamni in his address, expressed concern over the apathy of the education department.
The Union will soon meet the local legislator and the concerned officers of the education department to discuss the matter.
“The government from time to time talks about providing quality education to the school children, but what we have seen is utter contrast”, the KSU leader said.
He said the union considers education as one of the top priorities. “We will fight for our rights” Kharkamni said, while giving hope to the leaders of the village and the managing committee not to give up in their endeavour for providing a better future to their children.
