SHILLONG: North East Students Organisation (NESO), a conglomeration of different student unions from the North East region, accused the BJP of trying to implement its Hindutva agenda in the entire country.
The NESO chief made this observation as the BJP is hell-bent on adopting Citizenship Amendment Bill.
NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa on Tuesday said the BJP is not respecting the sentiments of the indigenous tribals but are working on vote bank politics.
“The attitude of the BJP is anti-tribal and anti North East,” he said.
The controversy over the CAB is yet to die out as the BJP in its poll manifesto has made it clear that the party would go ahead with the CAB if they come back to power at the Centre.
The BJP chief Amit Shah at a press conference had also stated that the party would implement the CAB after which National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be implemented across the country.
The entire North East region had witnessed stiff protests after the controversial Bill was passed in Lok Sabha earlier this year but it could not be passed in Rajya Sabha.
NESO has also rejected the views of state BJP leaders that Meghalaya should be exempted from the CAB or it should be made a state subject.
Jyrwa said the CAB is about the movement of the people and the Bangladeshi migrants at first will get Indian citizenship after which they are eligible to move any part of the country.
He added the North East region would definitely have an adverse impact if the Bill is adopted.
Indo-Nepal Treaty
Jyrwa said the CAB impact in the region including Meghalaya will be more worse than that of the Indo-Nepal treaty.
Jyrwa also said NESO is of the firm view that the Indo-Nepal treaty should not be made applicable in the Northeastern states including Meghalaya.
“We want that the treaty should not be made applicable in the North East as we have already seen the impact of the treaty in Meghalaya as well as in the capital Shillong,” Jyrwa said.
