SHILLONG: With rain and strong winds lashing the city, the team constituted by the State Forest department to identify vulnerable and weak trees in the city has its hands full.
The team, which was formed a few years ago and is headed by the Divisional Forest Officer is tasked with identifying vulnerable, dying and damaged trees and take steps accordingly.
The team’s work assumes significance as Shillong has a history of trees falling during rainy and windy season.
Two years back, three occupants of a moving local passenger taxi were killed and two others were injured at All India Radio Junction when a eucalyptus tree on the Raj Bhavan premises fell on the vehicle during incessant rain.
Instances of trees falling and blocking the roads keep on happening in the city and its outskirts during rains.
