Youth injured in lightning strike

TURA: A 21 year old youth from Chibinang area of Phulbari sustained burn injuries to his face after lightning struck his home during a thunderstorm early Monday morning.
The incident took place at around 3 O’clock in the morning when a storm hit the plains belt region of West Garo Hills.
A powerful bolt of lightning is said to have struck the electrical pole outside the home of the victim Pangkam Ch Marak of Chanupara village of Chibinang.
A powerful surge of current passed through the electrical wiring of the house destroying the switch board of the room, damaged his mobile phone and caused burn injuries to Pangkam’s face.
The victim is currently under treatment at Tura Civil Hospital.
The annual premonsoon thunderstorms are one of the most dangerous weather patterns in the northeast- particularly Garo Hills.
Every year injuries and deaths from lightning strikes are reported from the region during this season that stretches from March to May.
Most deaths from lightning have taken place when people take shelter under trees during storms or are outside in the open space in fields or rivers.
