SHILLONG: A public park will come up at Maxwelton Estate, Kench’s Trace in the city.
The state cabinet on Monday decided to build the public park as it will help the young and the old to have some relaxation.
Home Minister James Sangma told reporters that the government is concerned over the air quality of the city and the park will at least provide a space for the people to relax after hectic activities.
The decision of the cabinet has come at a time when the city does not have a proper park.
Though there was a land meant for a public park near Kench’s Trace beat house, a hostel is currently being constructed there. “We need an area where people can have access to park and the cabinet approved the proposal to construct the park over 7.8 acres at Maxwelton Estate”, James said.
According to James, though the area was earlier claimed by JN Bawri, the land is currently under the possession of the government following a court case.
To a query, he said people, if any, who have settled in the area will be provided alternate accommodation.
