TURA: The North East Forum for Indigenous People, of which the Garoland State Movement Committee is a member, have reiterated that all like-minded tribal groups of the region would unitedly oppose the central government move to enforce the Citizenship Amendment Bill while simultaneously demanding strong measures, such as Inner Line Permit, to check illegal influx into the tribal region.
Leaders of the GSMC who attended the first meeting of the forum at NEHU campus in Shillong, on Wednesday, said that it was a unanimous decision  of all the north east groups to oppose CAB and demand ILP.
” We will continue to oppose CAB until the government stops in it’s pursuit to implement it,” said GSMC chairman Nikman Marak who led the Garo Hills delegation to the forum meet.
He informed that forum leaders across the different states collectively resolved to address the issue of illegal immigrants in all the north eastern states and would have close consultation with social organizations in each place.
The forum also condemned the April 26 molestation incident of a student by an immigrant in Tripura and called for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) in all the north east states.
“To create public  awareness and support on the importance of this declaration, we will hold a seminar on UNDRIP during the celebration of ‘World Indigenous Day’ on August 9th, this year,” informed Nikman Marak while giving details of the resolutions passed by the NEFIP on it’s maiden meeting that was attended by student and NGO leaders from different states including Nagaland and Manipur.
