SHILLONG: Meghalaya Government is now contemplating to outsource some of the Government-owned hospitals in the state to professionals.
The plan which is at the initial stage was discussed in detail during the meeting of the Health department held here on Friday.
Health Minister AL Hek after the meeting told reporters that the the state had shortage of doctors especially specialist and super specialist which is a major challenge.
However, the Government  is now looking to improve the services of a few hospitals by outsourcing them to medical professionals under PPP mode.
Hek, however, made it clear that the Government would not hand over these hospitals to some NGOs as was done on the case of CHCs and PHCs but to capable professionals who can run the hospital effectively.
The Government plans to outsource Jowai and Nongstoin MCH to the private porofessionals apart from Baghmara MCH.
He said that the Government was mulling this step since the Government doctors and other staffs did not want to go and serve there.
” If Government doctors do not go there then who will go,” Hek said after the meeting.
