SHILLONG: The Global Social Welfare Organization (GSWO) on Friday criticised the government for not addressing the grievances of tenants and slammed house owners for exorbitant house rents.
The organisation said that the house rents are increasing beyond expectations in spite of the Meghalaya Urban Areas Rent Control Act 1972.
The organisation pointed out that the Act is dormant and not in force in Meghalaya. Article 6 of the Act states it is the duty of house owners to maintain the rented house. However, in many cases, rented houses are being maintained by the tenants and not by the house owners.
They went on to slam the house owners who are “extorting” money from the tenants by increasing the rent after every three years which is against the Act.
The organisation has urged the government to make the Act functional to stop the monopoly of the house owners.
With the implementation of the Act, the extortion of money in the name rent may be controlled, it said.
