SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma has stated that the Government will put in place mechanisms to ensure that the issue of illegal immigration is addressed.
Speaking to newsmen, Conrad Sangma said that the Government’s stand was clear on the issue of illegal immigration and the protection of the indigenous people.
“We want to ensure that illegal immigration does not take place in our state and it is a point of concern for us and we will take measures to address this issue,” the Chief Minister said.
The statement came from the Chief Minister as there is increasing demand from the pressure groups in Meghalaya to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to check influx.
While the State Government is yet to come clear on its stand as far as implementing ILP in the state, the State government has prepared the draft of the amended Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. Since the Act is related to the safety of the residents, the government will have to define who is a resident of Meghalaya.
The State Government has insisted that more teeth will be given to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act by amending it. Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the amended Act will serve the purpose of addressing the issue of influx and he had also hinted that the Amended Act will be perhaps more potent than ILP.
