SHILLONG: As many as 21 villages in the state were affected by Cyclone Fani on Saturday.
As per the report of State Disaster Management Authority, 14 families were affected while one person was injured in East Khasi Hills district.
Altogether 17 houses were damaged while information about damage to public properties is still awaited from several districts.
Out of the 21 affected villages, 12 are in East Khasi Hills district where five houses were damaged.
In South West Khasi Hills district, five villages were affected with six houses damaged. In West Khasi Hills nine families were affected. Reports of damage from several districts of Garo Hills are still awaited.
The state government has started assessing the damage.
Additional Chief Secretary PW Ingty on Sunday informed that assessment of damage was under way even as all deputy commissioners have submitted their preliminary reports.
Fani made a landfall at Puri in Odisha coast on Friday, packing rain and windstorm that gusted up to 175 kmph, leaving several people dead.
Large areas in the seaside pilgrim town and other places were submerged with water as heavy rains battered the entire coastal belt of the state.
The cyclone was downgraded to a depression as it swept north-eastwards from India into Bangladesh on Saturday, but was still powerful enough to submerge dozens of villages on the low lying coast.
