Fani hits 500 in state

SHILLONG: The number of people affected in Cyclone Fani on Saturday in the state has shot up to 588.
According to the assessment made on Monday, the district wise breakup of the affected people is West Khasi Hills (9), East Jaintia Hills (5), West Jaintia Hills (17), East Garo Hills (198) and West Garo Hills (359).
The assessment of people affected in other districts is yet to be made.
A many as 55 villages were affected and the district-wise number is East Khasi Hills (18), West Khasi Hills (2), South West Khasi Hills (5), East Jaintia Hills, Ri Bhoi and South Garo Hills (1 each) West Jaintia Hills (2) , East Garo Hills (8) and West Garo Hills (17).
The number of houses damaged is 153 and out of this, 23 houses are in East Khasi Hills, 51 in East Garo Hills and 61 in West Garo Hills.
Fani came close on the heels of another cyclone in April which too had caused extensive damage in the state and affected at least 5,000 people.
