BSF seizes cattle
Shillong: On May 6, the Border Security Force stationed at Baghmara, South Garo Hills apprehended cattle laden trucks which were on the way to Bangladesh. Upon receiving information, the troops tried to stop the vehicle near a petrol pump at NH-62 Baghmara but it fled. After pursuing it, they intercepted the vehicles near Jacksogram village. The driver with vehicle registration no MH-04-HD 8521 along with other two co-drivers were apprehended. While the driver and co-drivers of the other vehicle bearing registration number AS 16-C-6830 managed to escape. They also apprehended three Indian nationals along with two vehicles loaded with thirty cattle. All the seized items were handed over to the concerned department for further legal action.

2 held with hawala money
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force troops deployed at Borsora in South West Khasi Hills district apprehended two persons with illegal excess money generated from coal and stone business on Tuesday. The two persons are identified as 27-year-old Raj Chetry of Khonjoy under Nonghyllam in South West Khasi Hills and 29-year-old Golachan of Borsora village. The BSF apprehended Raj while he was moving from Borsora to Khonjoy in a bike and and recovered Rs.1,96,500/- cash from his possession. Further based on information divulged by him, BSF also apprehended another person Golachan from his residence and recovered Rs.17.93 lakh in cash. It is learnt that Golachan collected a sum of Rs. 20 lakh from one person from Bara Bazar, Shillong who deals in fruit business, on behalf of one exporter of coal and lime stone, from Barpetta (Assam). It also came to light that they used a distorted Rs 10 currency note for identification purpose during the transaction.

Unclaimed body
Shillong: The office of the Superintendent of police informed that on May 3, the body of Sunil Chettri was found lying unconscious at a footpath in Polo, Shillong and was later shifted to Civil Hospital, Shillong. But on arrival at the hospital he was declared brought dead by the attending MO. Later Inquest and other legal formalities have been observed and the same was sent to SDM&HO Civil Hospital, Shillong for holding PM examination. After PM examination the body was kept in the Civil Hospital Morgue Room for claiming. GSI Training Institute signs MoU with Guwahati univ
SHILLONG: An MoU between GSI Training Institute (GSITI) and Gauhati University (GU), Guwahati in collaboration for Academic and Research Programs leading to Ph.D. degree was signed on Tuesday at Guwahati University (GU). Geological Survey of India is a premier Earth science organization in the country established in 1851 having vast data repository in the field of earth sciences and professional training institute, GSITI with its headquarters at Hyderabad. The MoU will benefit both GSI and GU to exchange faculty and scientists in areas of common interest to impart training to all stakeholders. The MoU also enables both the institutes to collaborate in research of common interest where in GSI officers will be awarded Ph. D degrees. It will also enhance the Research & Development (R&D) activities in the North-Eastern part of India.

KV secures cent per cent in class X CBSE
SHILLONG: Kendriya Vidyalaya, Happy Valley School 58 GTC Shillong Meghalaya secured 100 per cent pass percentage in the Class X CBSE results which was declared recently. Out of 96 candidates, Meghna C secured 1st position with 96.4 per cent marks followed by R Tanisha with 95.8 and Sandipan Samanta with 95.4 per cent marks. 9 students scored above 90 percent marks in aggregate. Principal K Deran congratulated and praised the performance of the students. The school also achieved cent per cent results in Science and Commerce stream with Bhabna De from Science stream with 93.8 per cent marks and Shrishti Sunar bagged the 1st position in Commerce stream with 84.6 per cent. The topper in Arts Stream was Rinky Kumari with 90.2 percent marks.

Mawlai body appeals residents to join rally
SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee Mawlai (JACM) distributed appeals to the residents starting from Thangkhiew Petrol pump Nongkwar and all the way to Mawlai Mawroh to seek support for the protest rally on Thursday. JACM in a statement issued here said the protest rally is to protest the murder of Dismarlin Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi allegedly by four truck drivers on April 24. The police have issued a look out notice for the four truck drivers. Lyngdoh was the home guard at FCI, Khanapara.

World Red Cross Day celebrated
Shillong: World Red Cross Day was celebrated in the city at Raj Bhawan, Shillong on Wednesday. It is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swiss businessman Henri Dunant, whose efforts led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, adoption of Geneva conventions and creation of the iconic Red Cross symbol. The 2019 theme chosen is ‘Love’ and it aims to broaden the public’s understanding of the society by highlighting the diversity and universality of its work and approach. Addressing the gathering, Governor Tathagata Roy said that as the Red Cross Society is set to celebrate it 100 years in 2020 he called upon all to volunteer their services towards the Red Cross Society and contribute their time towards humanitarian causes. He also informed that the State Branch of the Red Cross has been providing awareness and giving training on First Aid and disaster management while teaching its members to take care of their own personal health. The Governor also assured all assistance and support for the centennial celebrations of the Red Cross next year. He also distributed certificates to life members of the Red Cross Society of the state.
