State cop on poll duty in Bengal commits suicide

JOWAI: A havildar of the Sixth Battalion of Meghalaya police who was on election duty in West Bengal committed suicide on Wednesday. Havildar Vikram Lama was in Kolkata for election duty, West Khasi Hills SP Herbert Lyngdoh said.
Without divulging details, the police officer said postmortem will be done on Thursday and the body will be sent to Shillong after that.
“His family members are already in Kolkata,” he added.
Seven companies of the Sixth Battalion have been deployed to West Bengal for the Lok Sabha elections. The personnel of the battalion alleged that they are getting only Rs 150 a day for food and most of the money is spent on water. Earlier after the Fifth Pay Commission, they used to get Rs 600 a day.
