TURA: Hundreds of students from various schools of Tura in collaboration with Garo organisations took out a protest march in the town to demand capital punishment for the accused in the rape and murder of a seven year old child whose body was found in the village of Megua Songmong two weeks ago.
Organised jointly by the Garoland State Movement Committee, AAYWS, AIGU and GSU (CEC) Interim body, students gathered at Chandmari field to hear leaders mention about rising cases of violence against children and women in different parts of Garo Hills.
“Such cases are happening time and again and we need to raise awareness about it. The only way we can prevent such heinous crimes from taking place is by creating awareness on parents and elders,” said GSMC chairman Nikman Marak during the rally.
Students chanted slogans demanding capital punishment against the accused involved in the cruel rape and murder of the child.
They also demanded early arrest and conviction of others, namely a computer teacher accused of molestation in Tura and a VEC secretary involved in assault of a woman RTI activist in Mahendraganj, to send a strong message against criminals.
The students later took out a procession from the Chandmari field to Tura bazaar via the deputy commissioner’s office area.
