Storm damages houses in Assam border villages

GUWAHATI: Over 50 houses in the Rongjuli area of Goalpara district near the Assam-Meghalaya border have been damaged by thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds since Saturday.
Official sources say about 50 houses belonging to residents of four villages have been damaged by a cyclonic storm on Saturday evening while two to three houses were partially damaged at Simlitola on Sunday evening.
“However, there has been no report of any loss of human lives or injuries till this evening,” Khanindra Bhuyan, project officer, Goalpara district disaster management authority, told The Shillong Times on Monday.
Meanwhile, residents of Dhupdhara and Goalpara town have informed that Sunday’s storm had uprooted trees, snapped cables including power lines and damaged houses in parts of the western Assam district.
“The rural areas of the district have borne the brunt of the inclement weather since Saturday with portions of several huts blown away, trees uprooted and power lines snapped,” Rabin Rabha, a resident of Dhupdhara said.
The storm also had a mild effect on Adokgre in North Garo Hills, about 15km from Dhupdhara, even as no damage to property or livestock was reported.
The Regional Meteorological Centre here on Monday has warned of thunder squall at isolated places over Northeast, including Assam and Meghalaya, with wind speed likely to reach up to 60km per hour.
Parts of Kamrup Metro district, including Guwahati, also witnessed a hailstorm with gusty wind albeit for a few minutes on Monday afternoon as well.
