TURA: A gang of highway robbers who, this week, waylaid several vehicles and robbed its occupants of their valuables on a desolate section of national highway 62 in East Garo Hills has been busted on Wednesday.
East Garo Hills police, on Wednesday morning, picked up five persons from Gabil Bisa village for questioning and during investigation identified three amongst them to be directly involved in the recent dacoity incident which took place on the night of May 12th.
The village is less than five kms from the highway where the robberies took place.
“One of the arrested persons, Rakna B Momin, who happens to be a teenager has been remanded to a juvenile home, while the other two, Manchang G Momin and Meksin G Momin have been arrested. The arrested men also revealed the names of two other accomplices of their group who are on the run and our teams are tracking them,” informed East Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police R T G Momin.
Three mobile phones taken away from their victims by the gang members during the highway robbery have also been recovered from the possession of the arrested men.
The arrested men have reportedly told police that the money robbed from the passing commuters on Sunday night are in the hands of the two absconding members of the criminal gang.
During the robbery on that fateful night, one of the victims, a resident of Tura, lost twenty thousand rupees after the amount was snatched from him by the armed criminals. They also took away five cell phones belonging to him and his companions who were together in the vehicle.
