Azerbaijan keen to invest in Assam’s tea sector

GUWAHATI: Azerbaijan has shown interest to invest in Assam’s tea sector and import Assam tea besides setting up partnership in tourism and information technology sectors.

Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to India, Dr Ashraf Shikhaliyev called on Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the latter’s office in Janata Bhawan on Friday and discussed bilateral issues of mutual interests between Azerbaijan and Assam.

Hailing Assam’s sprawling tea gardens and their produce, Dr. Ashraf Shikhaliyev expressed his country’s interest in investing in Assam Tea and import Assam tea for his country’s consumption. Referring to Azerbaijan’s popular tea drinking habit, Dr. Ashraf Shikhaliyev said that Assam tea would be in huge demand in Azerbaijan. He also stated that Information Technology and tourism were other two sectors in which both Assam and Azerbaijan can work together.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while presenting core sectors of business in Assam to Azerbaijan Ambassador, said that both Azerbaijan and Assam should send their respective business delegations to both geographical entities. Sonowal invited Dr. Ashraf Shikhaliyev to visit Assam once again with his country’s business delegation.

Dr. Ashraf Shikhaliyev acknowledging the hospitality of the people of Assam expressed his keen interests in strengthening his country’s bilateral relations with Assam. He also invited Chief Minister Sonowal to Azerbaijan which the Chief Minister accepted in principle.
