Editor,
The call by the Meghalaya Government for a central probe into the present row pertaining to the Cardiology Department of NEIGRIHMS which allegedly led to the loss of a woman’s life is a plausible one since the Institute falls under the administrative control of the central government. We must not however, overlook the fact that as often reported, the Institute has had its share of controversies in the past too though these were of lesser magnitude than the present one. Therefore what actually ails NEIGRIHMS, besides the present imbroglio, is perhaps something the authorities should probe into deeply. While the present call for a change of guard in the Institute is justified, it would, however, not be expected to bring in the desired outcomes subsequently if unfavorable designs exist within the Institute and which tend to undermine affirmative intent. As of now, the Institute draws in more patients because there are still many dedicated and sincere doctors and supporting staff therein who exhibit a high degree of professionalism in the different departments. These positive aspects could however be subverted in the long run if these possible unfavorable designs are not identified and rooted out to whatever extent possible.
Unfortunately the Governing Council of the Institute has remained dormant for more than four years now and this could perhaps be one of the primary reasons that led to the occurrences of a number of such unfortunate events in the Institute. Why the meeting of the Council has not been convened for such a long time is anybody’s guess but if the members feel that there has been no response to the initiatives taken by them to activate the Council then perhaps a stronger message could have been conveyed by them en masse instead of hanging on. Incidentally, as reported in the media it appears that the membership to the Council is drawn in mostly from amongst the citizens of Meghalaya though it would be appropriate perhaps to also draw in Council members from the other North Eastern states so as to bring in more impetus and thrust towards the progress and development of NEIGRIHMS The Secretaries of the Health Departments of the respective state governments of the region may be made members to keep these governments abreast about the ongoing affairs in the Institute.
While the governments of the North Eastern states have much at stake to ensure that the Institute flourishes, the Government of Meghalaya has a much bigger role to play in this matter since the Institute is at a stone’s throw away from the State capital itself and the people of the State stand to benefit more from the services that the Institute provides. Though not much was heard about the previous state government’s involvement with the Institute, quite contrarily the involvement of the present MDA Government often came in the news even within one year that it held the reins. The mediation by the present Chief Secretary of the state which led to the resumption of surgery in spite of the fact that the stalemate is yet to be resolved is also to be appreciated. Moreover the road leading towards the Institute from the city which was in an almost dilapidated condition in the previous years has improved now. These are favourable signs of the State Government’s commitment towards the welfare of the Institute . Meanwhile inputs of whatever form from the prominent personalities of the state who often avail treatment in the Institute will also reflect concern and contribute much towards the betterment of the Institute .

Mayhem in Bengal
Editor,
Maverick Mamata is creating mayhem in West Bengal by questioning the Election Commission authorities who earnestly want the election process to be completed without problems. Furious over the Election Commission’s order to cut short the campaign period for the last phase of the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal and action against two key bureaucrats, Trinamul Congress supremo described the move as ‘politically biased.’ She has shot a volley of questions, “ Does it mean that no one can else campaign after Modi’s rallies? “ Why was no action taken against BJP president Amit Shah, who triggered the violence with goons at Vidyasagar College and vandalism of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar’s bust there on Tuesday? Her posers roll off the tongue and so too her glib phrases, and other political parties are not so inclined to rub shoulders with her nor are distracted to sulk her.
Mamata is known for her short-temper and for her splendid gift of repartee. Our Prime Minister has had a lot of her vitriolic verbal attacks. Also, she has a mordant sense of humour. But some unfortunate developments in connection with the general elections in West Bengal might have been caused due to her sardonic and scornful attitude. Mamata’s tit-for-tat attitude has worsened the political situation in the state. As a seasoned leader, she should have kept a little more restrain, and by doing so, she is sure to upset the apple cart of the BJP and win the confidence of friends and foes alike. But political tactics and strategy elude her and she is being led to the vortex of further problems. Though glib talk and snappy wisecrack can win applause but when it comes to the core, how many would stand by her is the million dollar question.
