Grenade thrower in Guwahati blast case identified, 2 more detained

GUWAHATI: Assam police have claimed to have identified the miscreant who had hurled the grenade in front of a high-end shopping mall on the busy RG Baruah Road on Wednesday night that left 12 persons injured including two SSB jawans on duty.
Police have also apprehended two other suspects in the grenade attack case on Friday following Thursday’s arrest of the ‘mastermind’ and ULFA (I) leader Pranamoy Rajguru, and his accomplice Jahnabi Saikia, a small-time actress from the latter’s rented residence at Panjabari Area of the city.
Guwahati City Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said one person has been arrested by Golaghat police on Friday in connection with the case and he was being brought to Guwahati. The arrested person has been identified as former ULFA member and ‘bomb expert’ Amrit Ballav Goswami. Another woman has also reportedly arrested from Guwahati in the same case.
Kumar further said the person who had hurled the grenade at the security picket at RG Road on May 15 last has also been identified. “We will arrest him also very soon,” he added.
Meanwhile, mastermind of the attack, Rajguru, and his accomplice Jahnabi Saikia were remanded to 10-day police custody by a local court here on Friday.
Both were arrested from a rented house in the city and huge quantity of ammunition was recovered from the house, along with incriminating documents.
Sonowal briefs Governor Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday called on Governor Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhavan here on Friday and briefed him of the prevailing situation.
Though the meeting was one of a courtesy calls, the Chief Minister briefed the Governor especially in the aftermath of the grenade blast near the State Zoo in the city on Wednesday night.
The Chief Minister apprised the Governor of the current law-and-order situation prevailing in Brahmaputra and Barak Valley.
Meanwhile, security sources informed that the grenade blast in Guwahati on Wednesday night was an attempt by the banned ULFA (Independent) to hog headlines as the outfit has been frustrated of late because of continuous desertion by its disillusioned cadres.
