SHILLONG: The BJP which has failed to get even one seat in Meghalaya after fielding candidates from both Shillong and Tura seats is happy for the fact that urban voters have once again reposed their faith on the saffron party.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday shortly after the votes counting was over, BJP Candidate from Shillong Sanbor Shullai said that he was surprised that he got 76683 votes.
However, documents showed that in the last 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP got 95979 votes when party president, Shibun Lyngdoh had contested the polls
“Urban voters are wise enough,” he said while informing that in his South Shillong constituency, he got 13000 votes which was more than the 11000 votes which he had secured in the last Assembly polls.
Shullai said that the BJP was also leading in West Shillong and Pynthorumkhrah constituency even as he informed that in the entire Shillong seat, BJP got 43880 votes whereas Congress got 39000 votes.
With this performance, Shullai said that the party at the state level had now decided to convey to the party high command that the BJP had good future in Meghalaya provided they had enough time to spread its wings in remote areas of the state to enlighten people about the good workers of BJP.
Shullai said that the party entered into the fray at the last moment and he could attend only six meetings in his political campaign.
Earlier, Lyngdoh said that though BJP could not win Shillong seat but he was hopeful that people would vote for BJP even in Shillong seeing the development in the rest of the country.
