Steady hike in Assam HS exam success rate since 2010

GUWAHATI: The percentage of students clearing the higher secondary final examination in Assam has steadily increased on an average over the past decade.

Statistics provided by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council on Saturday revealed that the improvement has been recorded across the three streams – Arts, Science and Commerce since the year 2010.

The pass percentage in Commerce stream was the best out of three streams this year, with 87.59 per cent students clearing the exam. Back in 2010, the pass percentage was 73.32.

In the Arts stream, as against a pass percentage of 68.66 per cent in 2010, the percentage of students clearing the exam this year, was recorded at 75.14. The best pass percentage (79. 92) during the decade was recorded in 2016 though.

In the Science stream, despite a steady increase, the graph has relatively flat with pass percentage of 86.59 recorded this year as against 85.15 per cent in 2010. The best pass percentage (90.96) during the decade was recorded in 2016.

Meanwhile, private institutions continued their good show and have once again hogged the limelight in the Assam Higher Secondary Examinations, 2019, the results of which were declared on Saturday morning.

Bitupan Arandhara of Ramanujan Junior College, Nagaon stood joint first in Science, Khushboo Firdous of Brilliant Academy Junior College, Darrang district was placed first in Arts while Ashim Sarkar of Vivekananda Junior College, Cachar took top honours in the Commerce stream.

In regard to the district-wise performance, Nalbari topped the merit list in Commerce stream with a pass percentage of 97.79. Sivasagar bagged top honours in the Science stream with a pass percentage of 93.42, while Dhemaji emerged the most successful district in the Arts stream with a pass percentage of 89.52.

A total of 2, 42,843 candidates appeared in Higher Secondary Final Examinations this year, with 1, 86,187 in Arts, 37,455 in Science and 18,291 in the Commerce stream.
