GUWAHATI: The Assam government has enhanced the annual income limit of parents of students eligible for an admission fee waiver scheme.

In an office memorandum, the joint secretary, Assam higher education department stated that the annual income of parents of students availing the fee waiver scheme has been raised from Rs 1lakh to Rs 2lakh.

Earlier this year, the state finance minister, while presenting the annual budget for financial year 2019-20, had announced provision of fee waiver for students whose parents’ annual income is less than Rs 1lakh.

Institutions incorporated under the scheme include all provincialised and government colleges, Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Bodoland University, Cotton University, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Amcient Studies University, Nalbari and Women’s University, Jorhat.

“The admission committees of the concerned colleges and universities shall have the power to enquire into the income of the family in case of doubt and if the committee is of the view that the income exceeds Rs 2lakh, the committee may recommend cancellation of admission notwithstanding documents submitted by the student. Such enquiry may commence suo moto by the institute or on a complaint received against any student availing benefit under the scheme,” it was stated in the office memorandum.

The scheme does not cover private colleges, private universities and central universities situated in Assam.

Students whose parent/parents are working in government, semi government, state or central government undertakings will not be eligible under the scheme.

Fee to be waived under the scheme include first year admissions to HS, BA/B.Sc/B.Com and MA, M.Sc and M.Com sessions for 2019-20, second/third year degree admissions for those admitted with no fee during 2017-2018 and 2018-19 and final year admissions for MA, M.Sc and M.Com for those admitted with no fee during 2018-19.
