GUWAHATI: In a rather surprising development, a former Army man, now serving as a sub-inspector in the Assam Police border branch at Baihata Chariali in Kamrup district, has been declared a “foreigner” by the foreigners’ tribunal.
Mohammad Sanaullah, 51, who had served the Indian Army for three decades since 1987, has reportedly been taken into the custody of North Guwahati police and is likely to be sent to a detention centre.
A resident of Kolohikakh village under Chhaygaon revenue circle, about 10km from Boko, Sanaullah’s name was excluded from the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) along with his wife Sadbhanu Bibi, daughters, Sehnaj Akhtar, Helmina Akhtar and son, Sahit Ali.
The foreigners’ tribunal at Boko had served notice to him on September 4, 2018, and declared him a foreigner on Tuesday.
According to reports, Sanaullah who joined Border Police last year had received a Certificate of Appreciation from the President of India on September 2, 2014.
Sanaullah had completed his higher education from Chenga College in Barpeta district before joining the Indian Army.
Shocked and dismayed at the development, family sources said they would approach Gauhati High Court seeking “justice” for the police officer.
