WJH organises horticulture exhibition-cum-honey festival

JOWAI: An exhibition of horticulture produces and honey festival was held in West Jaintia Hills district on Wednesday.
It was organised by the office of the District Horticulture Officer at Jrisalein Playground, Chutwakhu Jowai.
Jowai Central MDC Awhoi Andrew Shullai and Additional Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills RS Manner graced the occasion as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
In his inaugural speech, Shullai lauded the horticulture department for giving the farmers a platform to showcase their produces.
“Such exhibitions will help our farmers to meet and interact with other farmers from various parts of the district”, Shullai said while encouraging them to embrace changes and adopt new methods of cultivation to increase their production for lifting their income for better livelihood.
The District Horticulture Officer BM Majaw, in her keynote address, spoke on the importance of bees and its ability to increase pollination in agricultural field.
“We need to conserve bees as the help our plants not only through pollination but also in various ways and bee keeping is one of the best way to preserve and conserve them”, Majaw said while also expressing her unhappiness to see that bushes and grass were burnt and such practices will not only destroy plants, but also destroy various kind of insect which help to keep the soil fertile.
