SHILLONG: The Congress legislators will not demand for a change of leadership in the CLP but will wait for an opportune time to effect a change of government if the MDA fails to fulfil the aspirations of the people.
A Congress leader admitted that there was hurry on the part of legislator H M Shangpliang to claim that the party will form the government with like-minded parties.
Moreover, toppling the NPP-led MDA government at this juncture will be difficult since it has strong backing of the BJP led-NDA government as there are two party MLAs supporting the state coalition.
A Congress source said on Tuesday that the CLP meeting held on Saturday did not raise any demand for change of leadership in CLP as the MLAs wanted to wait and watch the political development in the state over several pending issues, including CAB, which await resolution.
Though there is an overall resentment in the party over the inability of CLP leader Mukul Sangma to ensure victory in Tura parliamentary seat as well as in Selsella assembly seat, several Congress legislators feel that any demand for change of leadership in CLP will send a wrong signal since there will be similar demands in other states.
However, a few Congress legislators had expected Mukul to take moral responsibility for the poll debacle.
Sources pointed out that during the recent press conference, Mukul said the CLP wanted the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who offered to quit, to continue as the party president, but Mukul himself did not mention anything about taking moral responsibility for the poor results in Garo Hills.
According to party sources, if the Congress is able to topple the NPP-led government, the party MLAs may prefer a new CLP leader.
