GUWAHATI: Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed concern for the party in the wake of All India Congress Committee president Rahul Gandhi’s decision to resign from the post, saying “there is no option other than Rahul Gandhi to lead Congress.”
Addressing reporters here on Thursday, Gogoi said, “It is a matter of concern for the party as there is no other option other than Rahul to lead the party. This is something which we have raised after he announced his decision to step down as AICC president.”
The veteran Congress leader however speculated that the party national president might “stick to his decision to resign from the post”.
“We have been working for several years now and knowing him, if he has decided to step down as the president of AICC he will in all probability stick to it,” the Gogoi said.
The party’s debacle in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections had prompted the Congress chief to submit his resignation as AICC president, which however was rejected by the Congress Working Committee.
Gogoi further informed that the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee will hold a review meeting on June 15 and 16 in regard to the recently concluded parliamentary elections.
Congress could win only three of the 14 seats in Assam while BJP bagged nine, which is the highest-ever tally in the state for the saffron party.
