GUWAHATI: Almost a year after starting commercial production in its factory in Tezpur, a city-based start-up has made use of bamboo and cane as its primary resources to come up with unique bamboo fabric and home utility brands in the Northeast market.

Registered under the Start-up India campaign of the department for promotion of industry and internal trade in 2018, Ivantage Craft Pvt Ltd is eyeing high-end health-conscious clientele with the introduction of “Boocane” (bamboo, cane furniture, décor/utility items) and ‘Bambusa’ (bamboo apparel and clothing).

“Bambusa currently has various types of towels and socks in its range. We will soon be launching a series of products using bamboo fabric”, S.M. Sarma Bordoloi, founder of the startup, said at the launch of its showroom here on Sunday.

Bamboo fabric is known for thermostatic and anti-odour characteristics and is softer than other fabric.

The company is currently sourcing its raw material from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

“Both bamboo and cane are highly renewable resources and are strategic resources for climate change mitigation. With Northeast being a major bamboo and cane growing area, it has a much bigger role to play in climate change mitigation,” Sarma Bordoloi said.

The company has already started working with grassroots-level artisans across Northeast for manufacturing smaller products which will create multiplier effect in the long run.

“We are also exploring prospects of tying up with artisans in Meghalaya as well,” he said.

The firm has adopted globally trending designs for furniture and décor products which are free from iron nails and hazardous adhesive, stain and polish.
