Cattle smuggling in border increases

SHILLONG: The attempts of cattle smuggling has increased along the Indo-Bangla border in Meghalaya and particularly from the borders situated in Garo Hills region of the state.
Sources admitted that the attempts of cattle smuggling increased along the border since last month was a month of Ramzan and there is heavy demand of beef in the neigbouring country
In addition, as many as 17 companies of BSF were withdrawn from the border due to the election process recently but despite the withdrawal, BSF in the last 5-6 months was able to seize around 3000 cattles along the border.
Sources also said that following the verdict of the Supreme Court, the disposal of the seized cattles is now being done by police and more than 1000 cattles are there in the BOPs of the BSF and as many as 600 cattles have died in the recent past.
Reiterating that attempts of cattle smuggling has increased,sources added that the smuggling was earlier restricted to Jaintia Hills and Khasi Hills but now attempts are being made even in Garo Hills which shares the international boundary with Bangladesh
“ But BSF has been spoiling such effects frequently,” source said
Sources also said that the BSF is continuously sharing inputs about the smugglers from the Indian side with local police.
