Two-day national seminar on ‘Visual Media Cultures’ concludes
SHILLONG: A two-day national seminar on ‘Contesting the Site of Sights: The Discourse of Visual Media Cultures with Special References to Northeast India’ held at the EFL University, Shillong Campus concluded on Tuesday. Speaking at the occassion, Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui urged the academia to explore the use of scientific method of enquiry of researching the rich traditions, myths and superstitions among the tribal cultures of the northeast and to present those studies in the public domain for their benefit. While citing the examples of ‘thlen’ and ‘taro’, he stressed on the need to explore these cultural superstitions scientifically. He said that the media consumers and media itself should shoulder the responsibility of addressing viral stories in the social media platforms. He cautioned against the menace of fake news adding that social and visual media might trap us. The programme concluded with the felicitation of the former Director of Shillong Campus and Pro Vice-Chancellor of EFL University, Prof. KC Baral, who superannuated in May.

Cultural competitions
SHILLONG: Ramakrishna Mission, Shillong will organise its 45th annual cultural competition, 2019 which includes vocal music, sit and draw, recitation (in various languages), elocution, debate, quiz and more for nursery to college going students. The competitions will be held on all Saturdays and Sundays starting from July 6 till August 4. Prize distribution ceremony will be held on August 10. It was also informed that from this year, enrolment of candidates will have to be done online through the institute’s official website: www.rkmshillong.org.  Candidates can also visit Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Quinton Road and seek help for online enrolment. Last date for enrollment of the candidates is June 22.

HNAM objects over split in group
SHILLONG: The General Secretary of the Hynniewtrep National Achik Movement (HNAM), Bobby Basaiawmoit has objected to any move of registering a wing, circle or unit of the group without his knowledge. He submitted his objection to the Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday.
